Horticulture & Floriculture

What is Floriculture ?

“Flowers are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty out-values all the utilities of the world”

says Ralph Waldo Emerson, U.S. poet, essayist and lecturer.

Flowers play an essential role in people’s celebrations and every day lives. Weddings, festivals, funerals, special days like Mother’s Day, St. Valentine’s Day, etc are all peak periods of demand for flowers and plants. Cut flowers are combined into elaborate arrangements and bouquets, or several stems are packaged together for impulse cash-and-carry purchases. Flowering and foliage plants are combined together in baskets or planters, or sold individually with pot covers and sleeves to accent their beauty.

Floriculture or flower farming as it is popularly called is a discipline of Horticulture, and is the study of growing and marketing flowers and foliage plants. India is endowed with diverse agro-climatic conditions like good quality soils, suitable climate, abundant water supply, low labour cost, proximity to the market in Japan, Russia, South-East Asia, Middle-East Countries.
