What is Nanotechnology?

“A mobile phone so small that even an ant can use it…” a commercial which clearly highlights the idea that from macro to micro, from micro to nano, Science has become more sophisticated and has naturally entered the realm of what is arbitrarily labeled as nanotechnology.

It is a technology that creates small materials at the scale of molecules by manipulating single atoms. The name nano comes from the size of molecules which is measured in nanometers – or one billionth of a meter (0.000000001 meter). Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter at dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications. Encompassing nanoscale science, engineering and technology, nanotechnology involves imaging, measuring, modeling, and manipulating matter at this length scale.

The term nanotechnology was created by Tokyo Science University Professor Norio Taniguchi in 1974 to describe the precision manufacture of materials with nanometer tolerances. In 1986 the term was reinvented and expanded by K. Eric Drexler, in the book Engines of Creation, to the manipulation of matter on the scale of the nano-meter (one billionth of a meter).

The Roorkee College was established in 1847 as the First Engineering College in the British Empire. The College was renamed The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. It was given the status of University in 1948 of the United Province (Uttar Pradesh) in recognition of its performance and its potential and keeping in view the needs of post-independent India. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, presented the Charter in November 1949 elevating the erstwhile college to the First Engineering University of Independent India.


Since its establishment, the University of Roorkee has played a vital role in providing technical manpower and know-how to the country and in pursuit of research. The University ranks amongst the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering. The University celebrated its 150th year of  existence in October 1996. In 2001, the University of Roorkee was declared the 7th Indian Institute of Technology.
